My Aspirations As A Composer

Boy playing guitar

My compositions for video games, films, and other media focuses on providing not just simple linear music, but dynamic scoring which will reach the hearts of many and bring life to the characters and scenes on screen. I am able to adapt to different worlds and genres, while implementing techniques that are suitable for each kind of work I do. Adaptive/Interactive methods for video games, and mickey mousing or ostinatos depending on what situation within a film or any other media like anime. My work revolves around bringing my work to life in a more robust and moving way that creates a big impact for the audience in a theatre, or players playing the game during a pivotal story of a character, making them feel more attached through the movements of my music.

I am inspired by many infamous composers like John Williams, who creates very impactful music pieces like the Imperial March from Star Wars, using leitmotifs (recurring themes) and an intricate balancing of melody and harmony. He also frequently uses chromatic figures to create tension and build unease. Borislav Slavov, who made the entirety of the Baldur’s Gate 3 soundtrack, emphasizes on a blend of classical and electronic influences that utilizes simple melodic demos, before building them up into a full orchestral arrangement. This approach allows him to create diverse and dynamic soundscapes, from neoclassical to western style, or even ambient soundscapes all the while using the engine known as WWise. These artists inspire me to think more deeply into the art of music composition and its applications within media, without making the music dominate the other effects and visuals entirely.

However, it does not just end in inspiration, that is only just a stepping stone for me, enabling to compose my own original works using these techniques of these famous composers, with a twist that has its own personal identity. Every project will present a new challenge and many questions that will need to be answered - How does music interact with gameplay? What does the world sound like? How are the characters in film or game feel at this very moment? How do I reflect that emotion to the audience? These are the questions that I am drawn to answer through the power of music and sound. I need to become the character themselves and feel what they’re feeling in the specific scene during that very moment.

In my work, mixing technique and feeling into my music is a very important aspect, as it would give my compositions a structural and melodic form. In my creative process, whenever I work on a project, thinking on how to adapt to each kind of media is very important, as I have to constantly think on what kind of genre each piece of music should be, and I am well versed in every musical genre, and can create a piece using the right techniques. This is why inspiration from other artists are important, as they are my research space and can utilise their techniques such as sound layering and melodic demos or using orchestral terms like leitmotifs and chromatic figures in order to bring out a certain emotion in my compositions.

I have a strong background in working with many digital audio workstations like Ableton Live, FL Studio, Studio One, Pro Tools, and notation programs like Guitar Pro 8, which allow me to blend and bridge gaps between music, technology, and theory in order to compose soundtracks that resonate with the world of a game, film, or even characters in other cultural media like anime. I am also proficient in software like FMod, Unity, and the WWise engine, which would help me in creating worlds in video games more interactive and or adaptive depending on the type of game it is. These kind of programs allow me to navigate through my workflow and collaborations more smoothly and make my experiences more engaging and organized at the same time.

My dream is not just to contribute to the creative/music industry as a composer, but I also want to create music that is not only heard but felt through the hearts of people which deepens their emotional connections to the games, films, and the characters they represent. As I continue to grow as a composer, I am committed to bringing life into the media I work on through sound, and refine myself and my voice, expand my toolkit and connect with those that share the same passion for video games, music and interactive media and make a positive impact on the game industry as a whole.
